August 2008 events week commencing Friday 1stA new plaque to celebrate 100 years of scouting and mark 50 years since the World Scout Jamboree was held in Sutton Park, was unveiled at a special ceremony. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders from all of Birmingham's six districts attended when the Chief Commissioner for Northern England, John Asplin performed the ceremony on the Jamboree stone on Keeper's Hill near Streetly Gate. The event was exactly 50 years to the day since the unveiling of the existing plaque on the Jamboree obelisk by the Mayor of Sutton Coldfield, Councillor Mrs Grounds. The then Chief Scout Lord Rowallan also attended. Also in attendance was the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, West Midlands and Birmingham Scout County President, David Bradnock, the Scout County Commissioner for Birmingham, Pete Oldham and the Girl Guiding Commissioner for Birmingham, Sarah Trinder. The event included an exhibition with displays of photographs and memorabilia from the 1957 Jamboree, along with photographs of the centenary celebrations held in the park throughout 2007. The new plaque has been provided through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which also - with the support of Sutton Parks department - enabled the recent planting of 50 oak trees between the Jamboree stone and Streetly gate in the park, now known as Jamboree Avenue.
